|1-Another Christmas Movie to See!
Reviewed by Freak of NFA
It's that time of year again, or at least it will have just BEEN that
time of year again when The Word 9 is out and about, and there are more
and more Santa films to see at the cinema. Movies like Santa Clause -
The Movie, Miracle on 34th Street etc, have always been firm favourites
with a great mix of fun and familiarity, so it's refreshing to see a
film that puts a slight twist in the traditional image of Santa.
Tim Allen, of "Home Improvements" fame, currently on C4, plays a hotshot
salesman who - in a typial "Christmas Movie Family" - is seperated from
his wife and who only gets to see his son every now and again, the lad
spending most time with mum and stepdad, a psycologist expertly played
by Judge Reinhold.
As you'll have seen in the trailers and on Moviewatch, on Christmas Eve
Scott's (Tim Allen) son hears something on the roof, dad is dispatched
to investigate, and inadvertedly surprises the current Santa who tumbles
from the roof and lands rather heavily in the snow. Scott searches for
some ID and finds a card reading "Santa Clause - North Pole", on the
reverse of which is the message "If anything should happen to me, put on
the suit. The reindeer will know what to do".
This not-quite-deceased Santa promptly vanishes leaving the suit behind
while Scott and son are goggling at the Reindeed on the roof, leaving
Dad to make the horrendous mistake of getting into the sleigh and
eventually putting on the suit and becoming the new Santa, and from
there the story follows the unwilling Scott as he discovers the North
Pole, the Elves and goes on his rounds the following year, all how you'd
expect a Santa movie to go, but there are a few more suprises and
delights towards the end which I'll leave for you to discover.
If you've got kids then they're going to absolutely love this film, hell
I'm 25 and I thought it was great and my girlfriend laughed like crazy.
Basically it's a very funny film which manages to be traditional while
twisting the concept of Santa slightly, great for all ages!
Overall? Great acting, especially from Tim Allen (I'll never be able to
watch Home Improvements again without wondering where Tim's beard has
gone!), and some great ideas make it a film to go see.
